Sport in the Czech Republic can be defined in many ways. Czech people are big believers in the outdoors and they like to entertain themselves through different sporting activities. As a result, the visitor has many options to choose from.
Almost any sport one can imagine is on offer, but because the Czech Republic is three-quarters surrounded by mountains, there are a myriad of skiing and wintersports destinations (at a much more reasonable price). Český Raj and Šumava are 2 areas that offer hiking, rock climbing, camping, horseback riding, etc. And you will be doing this amidst incredible scenery.
Then, of course, there are the many lakes and rivers that give the visitor the chance for canoeing, kayaking, yachting, etc. The Czechs are well known in the water sports disciplines, having been both World and Olympic Champions. So there will be no shortage of opportunities.
For lovers of golf, there are plenty of courses to meet one's needs. Tennis is the 3rd largest sport in the Czech Republic (Hockey and Soccer are 1st and 2nd), and you may be familiar with some of the great names of Czech Tennis- Ivan Lendl, Martina Navrátilová, Jana Novotná. There are many courts, mostly clay, that can be combined into any holiday/vacation.
But hockey, this is the sport of the nation. The fact that such a small country has such a large professional league is a measure of its popularity. Add to that the fact that many Czech players are to be found in the highest echelons of international hockey leagues in the U.S.A., Finnland, Russia. In the Czech Republic hockey is not just a sport, it is a way of life.
