Situated in Southern Bohemia, overlooking a hairpin bend of the great Vltava River, is the fantastic Renaissance castle of Rožmberk nad Vltavou. Named after a noble family of the same name, the castle is part ruin, part extant. The ruined Upper Castle was built in the 13th century but was destroyed in a fre in 1522. The Lower Castle dates from the 1550's and contains all sorts of marvels; from paintings, sculpture, procelain, furniture, weapons and medieval instruments of torture.
What is most impressive, though, is her 16th century Banquet Hall. The entire room is covered in Italian Renaissance frescoes, one even studded with jewels. So, if you are looking for someithing a little off the beaten track, then Rožmberk nad Vltavou might just be for you. But beware of the ghost of the White Lady!!
