What can one say about Český Krumlov that hasn’t already been said? It is by far, the most visited place in Southern Bohemia, but having said that, it is still the jewel of a region that is replete with special places. Český Krumlov was originally a Bohemian Estate, and it’s rulers were important men indeed. Today, the visitor will find a living medieval Europe in the heart of the New Europe, complete with small alleyways and passages, and the second largest castle in the country (after Prague) that looks the way it did when it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 16th century.
The Vltava River cuts through the medieval town and is still used today for kayaking, canoeing and small boatcraft. The visitor can journey along the river, heading north or south, and travel the way the original inhabitants did in the Middle Ages. One of the things that makes Český Krumlov most special is its castle that looms over the river and the medieval city as the great stalwart protector.
When you visit the old streets and lanes that compose Český Krumlov, you will feel really transported to another age. There are, of course, all the amenities that a modern traveller has come to expect, but the town allows you really become part of a world that was simplistic in its design and sincere in its charm. Home to many different annual music and folk festivals, Český Krumlov leaves the visitor with the impression that time is irrelevant and life a lot less complicated.
