Again located in the heart of Central Bohemia, is a true example of a fairy tale castle. Konopiště, originally built in the 16th century, today resembles a place where Sleeping Beauty might reside. Reconstructed at the end of the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style, it is a place full of oddities, but a memorable experience nonetheless.
Konopiště is historically important as well. Her last, and most famous owner was none other than Archduke Franz Ferdinand D'Este. The heir to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, he was brutally assassinated, along with his Czech wife, in Sarajevo in 1914. The result of which was the beginning of the Great War, WWI.
Archduke Ferdinand used the chateau/castle for hunting expeditions, and much of what one will see there is from his efforts. But the chateau also sontains some splendid originals from Durer, and a wealth of Meissen porcelain. Encircled by tall woods and small lakes, Konopiště also allows the visitor to enjoy the majesty of her surroundings.
